Choosing Your Colors

Before choosing your colors, I love choosing the location. If we were going to be standing in front of a bright and bold graffiti wall, we probably wouldn’t choose soft pastels! But I find that most of the time, when we’re working outdoors, that softer muted tones aren’t just beautiful, but they also enhance the focal point — the beautiful people! So when in doubt, choose soft pinks, muted blues, heather gray, creams, leather brown, and white!

Yes to the Dress!!

If a client ever asks if they should wear a dress or not, my answer is always YES!! And long ones are my FAVORITE!! One thing that I especially loved about the dresses they chose is that they were all the same style, just different colors. I also loved that they all had matching shoes on!! By starting with the dresses and choosing softer muted tones that complimented the beautiful mid-winter landscape, they were then able to better choose what the guys were going to wear.

Style for the Guys

In my family session style guide, I talk about how layering can bring added dimension and interest into a photograph. Where the Jacob family chose to eliminate patterns, this became really important in their overall look. Imagine if the guys weren’t wearing dress shirts and sweaters! The subtle touches of color from the collars was perfect!! Blazers are also amazing if sweaters aren’t your thing!
